Administrative / Biographical History

The Liverpool University Society replaced the Old Students Association. The Society was wound up in 1967. The resolution of the General Meeting of the Society, 12 Oct. 1967, winding up the Society and transferring the funds and records to the University with a request that the University Gift Fund be permitted to administer the Funds of the Society, is quoted in Minute 43 of the Finance Committee of the University, 13 Feb. 1968 which agreed that the Gift Fund administer the funds of the former Society. University Report Book Volume 58 p.93 comprises a paper dealing with the constitution of the Society and showing the residual funds of the Society.

Minute Book of the University of Liverpool Society (1932-1948)

Scope and Content

The Minutes are signed but are not indexed. Council Minutes 12 Dec. 1932 - 8 Feb. 1939: All meetings were held in the City Analyst's Room, Mount Pleasant. At the beginning of sessions 1932-1933 and 1933-34 the members of Council and the years they represent, the Guild President, the editor of the Chronicle and Chairman, Hon Treasurer and Secretary are listed. At the beginning of each successive session until 1939 note is made merely of Officers elected for the session. Minutes of "Provisional Committees" 4 Mar. 1947 - 16 Sept. 1948 There is a note at the beginning of these minutes by G.H. Turner which says "This Minute Book [containing Council Minutes] was sent to me in 1947 after I had agreed with the Hon. Treasurer to attempt to revive and reform the Society which had lapsed in 1939 and during the war years". He refers in the note to a dance which was the last social event held. Pasted into the Minutes is a printed sheet advertising the Society and asking for support.

The first pages of the ledger deal with current accounts with the Midland Bank, Rodney Street. Receipts and payments for various Dinners, Ballets, Operas etc. are noted. There are also notes on deposits and refunds connected with an Ilkley weekend in Sept. 1961. Clipped into the back of the volume are a number of Statements of Accounts for 1956 - 1961.

Chairman's Correspondence (1963 - 1967)

Scope and Content

Earliest letters refer to a visit by the University of Liverpool Society. to the Cunard Ship "CARINTHIA". Other letters refer to the accounts of the Society and the election and resignation of officers. In January 1965 letters are concerned with a General Meeting of the Society and in a copy of the Chairman's notice of the meeting he says that the Society can no longer exist unless it receives substantially more active support than it receives. There is a certain amount of correspondence with Lewis's Bank Ltd.

Minutes and notes on meetings of the University of Liverpool Seminar 22 Oct 1926-28 Oct 1938; at the back of the volume is: a list of books studied in the Seminar 1918-1935; members list; account of the history of the seminar to 1926; list of former members not recorded in the previous list commenced 1926; pasted and loose in the volume are: copies of notices of meetings; lists of names and addresses 1936-1938; copies of particulars re the University's MA in Philosophy for non graduates course Oct 1937 and not dated and cuttings re Prof Alexander Mair from the Liverpool Daily Post Oct 1927. The last notes in the minute book refer to arrangements for three meetings to be held in January 1939 but there is no record of whether they were held or as to the precise circumstances in which the Seminar ceased to exist. Mrs. Pamela M. Huby, Reader in the Department of Philosophy, recollects private meetings being held after the Second World War in the room of Professor A.J. Dorward (Professor of Philosophy 1928-54), with a few persons from outside the University attending, but these meetings were not on such a formal basis as those of the previous Seminar

Administrative / Biographical History

Professor Alexander Mair, Dean of the Faculty of Arts 1908-1911, Chair of Philosophy 1910-1927. Membership of the Philosophy Seminar included not only members of staff and students (in particular research students) of the Department of Philosophy but also interested persons (in particular Anglican and Non-Conformist clergymen) in the region.

Officers Training Corps (1911, 1922, 1931-1938)

Scope and Content

Papers relating to the history of the OTC and photographs of the OTC.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Officers Training Corps was founded in 1919 and was attached to the King's Liverpool Regiment. From 1928 the corps had its own drill hall and rifle range. Following the outbreak of World War II, the OTC was enlarged and reorganised on a Faculty Basis as the Senior Training Corps. All non medical male students were required to train with either the STC, the University Air Squadron or the Naval Division. In 1955 the STC resumed as the OTC and has continued to operate under this name since then.
